Trawick Sport was born out of veterinarian Dr. Erin Trawick-Smith’s interest in developing a breeding line from her beloved mare, Kona. Kona is a fourth-generation mare from a line of career broodmares out of Augustin Walch’s W. Charlot Farm in Ontario. The line started with the first mare he brought from Germany to Canada — Sarabande— in 1980.

Kona did not have a successful performance career because of a combination of being matched with the wrong people in her prime and unaddressed chronic pain. Dr. Trawick believes deeply in Kona’s intelligence and strength of character. Her foals so far have solidified that faith. They are people-oriented and spunky, but energy-conserving on the ground. They have great bone and large ears. They are stamped by their mother and will require careful training to meet their potential.

Owning a mare with such a meaningful presence has fueled Dr. Trawick’s professional interest in reproduction. This has in turn become a quest to care for young horses thoughtfully. We intend to keep our fillies for breeding before developing them for performance homes. The project is still in its early stages because it takes a pretty long time to grow horses, but we hope to start a legacy of quality, trusting competitors.
